30 years anniversary of Chernobyl
Super Gau - Worst Case Nuclear Accident
In 1996, I was part of the first Greenpeace Mission going into the 10km Zone in Chernobyl. An unforgettable and scary experience.
Back in the late 70s - I was just getting interested in politics and environmental issues, the discussion about Nuclear Power was running hot in Germany. Pro Nuclear Power scientists ,companies and government officials claimed that the chance of a Super Gau happening was estimated anywhere from 1: 10 Million up to a 1 : 100 Million chance per year and plant to happen.
Beginning of 1980s , 6 years before the Chernobyl Super Gau estimates had arrived at a possible Super Gau ratio of 1: 10.000 which was a 1000 times more and quite a bit more realistic .
Today after Chernobyl in 1986 and Fukushima 25 years later in 2011 , serious experts are talking about the possibility of a Super Gau every 10-20 years .
There are about 450 Nuclear Power Plants worldwide.
